We are just painting on Friday.

Shade Charts

Are due Wednesday, January 30. The top row should consist of spectral colors in value order with the lightest on the left and the darkest on the right. The shades should progressively get darker as you move down. You should maintain both the vertical incremental value shift as well as the horizontal normal value relationships.

Try to maintain an incremental value shift on the purples and blues, but don't be disturbed if the lower several steps look very similar. As we discussed in class, it's difficult to shade these colors.

Spectral Tint Charts

Are due Monday, January 28. The spectral colors should be in value order with lightest on the left and darkest on the right. Each column should have 9 steps including the pure spectral color.The bottom row should be pure while the top row should be the lightest. Remember to maintain the normal value relationships horizontally, while controlling the incremental value shift vertically.

As usual, you are working with 1 inch squares.

Color Wheel & Spectrum

Your color wheel and spectrum are due Friday, January 25. The tiles in both the spectrum and the color wheel should be 1 inch squares. The color wheel should appear circular (I know that seems obvious, but you'd be surprised by how many non-circular color wheels I've seen). Both the spectrum and color wheel should be labeled.

Keep painting your cards. I can't stress enough how important it is that you continue with this outside of class. It is so difficult to catch up when you fall behind in this class. Wednesday, January 23 is a painting day. No lecture planned.

Edit: Remember that you need to maintain the normal value relationships between the colors. Nothing on the color wheel should be darker than purple. Remember you will probably need to add white to purple, red purple, blue purple, blue green and blue. Also remember that you need to make each color as bright (highest chroma) as possible.

One more hint: The phthalocyanine green is NOT spectral green. Green (and all secondaries) need to appear visually halfway between the 2 primaries that compose it.

1:1 Pigment Charts Due on Friday Jan 18

These should be in your portfolio, set up on the page in the manner I illustrated in class. A labeled pigment scale should be at the top of your page, with a labeled 1:1 pigment chart below. Excess rubber cement should be cleaned up, and your project should be as neat and presentable as possible.

Continue painting your incremental pigment cards, and be prepared to paint at the beginning of class on Friday.

Design 2 Spring 2008

Welcome to Stover's Design 2 Spring 2008 Class. This blog is intended to supplement our class in several ways. This is a place where I will make announcements prior to class. For instance, if I am unable to attend class on a certain day, I will inform you in a post that so you will not have to show up for class when I won't be there. I will also post reminders for assignments that are due. Sometimes I will post links I think are of interest to you as a student.

It's a good idea to check the blog before each class so you will be prepared for any unexpected situations. I encourage you to leave comments. If you have a question, this is a good place to ask it. This would be helpful to you and to other students who may have the same question.

I'm really looking forward to a great semester.
