Design 2: Tone Charts

Because we had to miss class on Friday, and some of you may be unclear on what is expected on your tone charts, I am going to summarize here:

Tones are hues with gray added. The gray lowers the chroma of the hue. Some people have a hard time distinguishing value difference from chroma difference, so to eliminate any chance of value difference interfering with our perception of chroma difference, we want to maintain the normal value of each hue.

What you need to do:

Mix a gray with black and white that is the same value as each hue. For instance, you would need a light gray for yellow and a dark gray for purple.

Add the gray incrementally to the hue and paint a card with each mixture.

The goal is to have a chroma transition in 9 steps from pure hue to pure black & white gray of the same value.

The charts will be set up in ROYGBV order. The pure hues should be on top and the pure grays should be on the bottom. There should be 7 incremental steps of tones in between the pure hues and pure grays.

If you are unclear about what you need to do, please ask questions here.

Snow Day

No class today, Friday, February 12. Design Students, you know what you need to do. Your shade charts are due on Wednesday, February 17, and your tone charts are due on Friday, February 19. If you have any questions about your tone charts, please post them as comments here, so everyone can benefit from my answers.

Drawing students: You need to repeat the assignment we did in class on Wednesday. Do 2 drawings in which you use vertical and horizontal alignment, use your pencils to measure angles and distances between objects and look at the negative shapes. These two drawings should be different from each other. You can use the same objects, but rearrange them. When you come to class on Wednesday, February 17, you should have your homework that was due today, plus 2 more drawings using the same technique. Again, if you have questions, post them here and I'll be happy to answer them.

Have fun, be safe and stay warm!

Itten Quote

I've been reading Johannes Itten's "The Elements of Color" and came across this passage:

"Only those who love color are admitted to its beauty and immanent presence. It affords utility to all, but unveils its deeper mysteries only to its devotees."

Just thought I'd share that with you.
