Summer 09 Painting Class: Materials

Welcome to the blog! If you are in Painting 1, the following list is pretty comprehensive, although there are some things I have left out for the moment. If you are at a higher level and already have a collection of pigments you are probably OK. Please look this over and ask any questions you have before buying this stuff.

Painting Materials List:

Paint: All Oil: BEWARE OF THE WORD “HUE” ON A TUBE OF PAINT. IT MEANS THE PIGMENT IS NOT REALLY WHAT IT SAYS IT IS.

Titanium White (large tube)
Mars or Ivory black
Alizarin Crimson
Ultramarine Blue
Cadmium Yellow Medium or Azo/Hansa Yellow
Burnt Umber
Burnt Sienna
Yellow Ochre
Viridian
Cadmium Red Medium or Napthol Red Medium

Brushes: Boar’s Hair Bristles

Wide flat (around an inch wide or more and slightly taller than it is wide)
Large round
Small round
Small flat
Palette knives

Palette: Whatever you choose, avoid buying something with built in wells. You want a FLAT surface. Choose one of the following:

piece of plexiglass or glass
Disposable palette
Premade acrylic or wooden palette (don’t get a plastic watercolor palette with wells)

Odorless mineral spirits (artist grade)

Gesso

Gesso brush (just an inexpensive house painting brush...2.5-3 inches wide should be fine)

Jar with a lid for medium (must be glass or metal)

Rags

Bar of ivory or other mild, white soap.

Canvas: 100% cotton duck, medium weight.

Surfaces:

We'll be working on a variety of surfaces, starting with masonite. We'll also build stretchers from scratch and stretch canvas on them. Other surfaces we will use are gessoed paper and possibly wood. Masonite and wood are available at Lowe's & Home Depot. You can buy a large sheet and cut it yourself, or have the store cut it into smaller pieces. On the first day of class, I will provide a 2 foot square piece of masonite for each Painting 1 student so everyone has a surface to begin with. After that, each student is responsible for having a prepared surface at the beginning of each class.
